Xander

Xander opened his eyes. For a moment, he was disoriented. It took him a few seconds to remember he was in his bed, in his room. He was positive he had heard his name, and just when he thought he imagined it, Xander heard it again. It was a lot fainter than the first, but it was definitely real—and it was a familiar voice, a man’s voice. In one swoop, he stood up, and his head naturally peeked out of the window. He waited, he listened, and there it was again.

“Xander!”

Xander closed his eyes. He listened. The name was called once more, and this time he knew precisely whose voice it was.

“Grayson,” he murmured.

He teleported, without even knowing where—taken by a type of feeling he never knew before. It was a combination of happiness and surprise… like when you come home to a puppy introduced to you by someone for the first time. More importantly, the young man had no idea where he was teleporting to—following Grayson’s voice into the night.

When Xander came out of his teleportation, he was outside the Branswell Cuban Café. It was the place he, Grayson, and Chad loved as kids.

What am I doing, he thought, at this place and at this hour?

He wore a white t-shirt, one size larger, and black boxers. The young witch was barefoot, and he didn’t bring his phone.

“Xander!”

Now Grayson’s call was closer. It was a lot closer. He looked around, looking for any sign of life. Then he looked down.

In the basement, the thought came, under the restaurant.

He immediately teleported into the place and went straight to the basement.

The lights were on.

He was onto something.

“Oh, my God,” he whispered when he saw his friend. “Grayson.”

Xander’s friend was strapped to a chair. His head was down, and the young man saw what he assumed to be Grayson’s blood on the floor.

Three men were standing above him, and Xander instinctively knew they were demons.

Xander opened his hands and watched them burn, one by one—like meat grilled in a hurry—before going poof.

He ran to his friend. “Grayson?”

Xander unshackled him, but while he was doing that, two other demons showed up behind him.

The young witch didn’t have enough time to attack them and help his friend, so Xander grabbed Grayson—teleporting back to the coven.

Back in his bedroom, Xander placed Grayson on his bed and ran to the kitchen.

“Where’s it?”

The young man didn’t find the healing potions where they usually would be, in the cabinet above the stove.

Charlotte, he thought, always fixing things.

Then he saw them on the counter.

He grabbed several and ran back to his room.

Xander sat next to his friend, holding up his friend’s head and placing the liquid into the mouth.

As he gently set Grayson back onto the pillow, he sighed. “You’re gonna be okay,” he said.

Xander sat next to his friend and held his hand, waiting for the potion to do its thing.

Grayson was human, and these potions were meant for magical beings, but he prayed hard.

Within a couple of minutes, Grayson woke up.
